Local Broadcasters Team Up to Prepare Community for Switch to Digital TV

WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast, and WEAR ABC 3 are partnering to help educate and prepare local viewers for the upcoming switch to digital TV. Projects include co-producing a one-hour informational television program, "DTV Answers," which will air on both stations Saturday, January 17 at 9 p.m.; and Go Digital Day, a free DTV event on Saturday, January 24 from 10 a.m.-noon at the WSRE Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio.

Both broadcasters have been communicating with their viewers for over a year about the imminent analog shut-off set to occur on February 17, 2009. "With the switch only one month away, it is vital that we reach out to the segment of our population that is unaware or simply hasn't acted yet to make the switch," says WSRE General Manager Sandy Cesaretti Ray. "Whether it actually happens on February 17, or possibly in a few months, it is still important to make sure you are ready now. If affected and you do nothing, you will lose the ability to watch TV."

The local TV program, "DTV Answers," will cover a wide array of topics from why the switch is happening, what to do if affected, antenna issues, updates on the government coupon program and where to find help. The program will be co-hosted by WSRE's Lloyd Patterson and WEAR's Dan Thomas. Guests will include a panel of experts ranging from TV engineers to station folks that have been out spreading the word. There will also be a phone bank of volunteers available to answer viewer calls live during the program.

Go Digital Day is a free, family-friendly event aimed at providing viewers with a wealth of information to help them get ready for the switch to digital. Local TV experts will be on hand to answer specific questions, two informational sessions will be held, and kids will be entertained with activities and can meet Clifford the Big Red Dog and WSRE's mascots, the WSRE Kids. Plus, participants will have the opportunity to register to win a free digital converter box and other prizes.

WSRE can be seen over the air via analog on channel 23 or digital on channel 23-1, on cable channel 8 in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties, cable channel 9 in Okaloosa County, cable channel 4 in Baldwin County, channel 23 on Dish Network and DirecTV. WEAR ABC 3 can be seen over the air via analog on channel 3 or digital on channel 3-1 and on cable/satellite channel 3.
