Threat to State Funding for WSRE

Dear Viewers and Friends,

In a complex and rapidly changing world, public media and WSRE continue to provide a solid return on your investment for over 40 years now. That return is realized every day through the enrichment of our local community. With over 60 hours per week of educational and commercial-free programming that expands children’s minds, documentaries that open up new worlds to you, trusted news programs that keep you informed, and cultural specials that bring the arts home to you, WSRE is essential.

There has been great debate at all levels of government regarding the funding of public broadcasting. At the state level, 2012 funding for Florida’s public broadcasting stations has been reduced 30% overall from 2011 levels. The state budget is under review by the Governor’s Office, and even this reduced level of funding stands a good chance of being eliminated entirely through line item veto. Although we understand that not every program can be funded in these challenging times, total and immediate elimination of all state funding for public broadcasting would have severe repercussions locally.

Your engagement with us — as a viewer, supporter, friend, volunteer, or informed and concerned citizen — is critical.  We understand that the Governor may make his final decisions regarding the budget and continued funding for public broadcasting by this Thursday, May 26. We seek to keep you informed so you can decide the best course of action to take in support of WSRE.

Thank you for your vigilance and support of WSRE,
Sandy Cesaretti Ray
