WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast, has won another National Telly Award. WSRE received a Bronze Telly Award for the original production “Ashley Brown In Concert: Call Me Irresponsible” in the entertainment category. This honor marks the eighth National Telly Award WSRE has won for original programming since 2008. WSRE won a Bronze Telly Award earlier this month in the documentary category for “Lighthouses of the Gulf Coast: Sand Island to St. Marks.”
General Manager Sandy Ray states, “We are thrilled to be recognized in the entertainment category for this production featuring a hometown Broadway star. As always, we are honored by the support from the community that makes it possible to create award-winning productions like this one.”
WSRE’s original concert special featured Gulf Breeze native Ashley Brown, who originated the role of Disney’s Mary Poppins on Broadway, performing songs from her debut album Speak Low and other songs from the Great American Songbook. Singer, pianist and songwriter Tony DeSare – who was named a “Rising Star” Male Vocalist in the 2009 Downbeat Critics Poll – joined Ashley on stage during the performance. The concert was filmed in high definition in November 2010 at the WSRE Jean and Paul Amos Performance Studio on the Pensacola State College campus, and debuted on WSRE in March 2011.
WSRE wishes to thank SunTrust Bank, Pensacola News Journal, Cox Communications, Pensacola Magazine, AT&T The Real Yellow Pages and all our WSRE donors for making this project possible.
