US Senate Candidate & Former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio Guests on "Conversations with Jeff Weeks"

This Friday at 9 p.m. on WSRE, “Conversations with Jeff Weeks” welcomes former Florida House Speaker and US Senate candidate Marco Rubio. Initially considered a long shot in his bid for the Republican nomination for the now vacant US Senate seat against popular Florida Governor Charlie Crist, in recent weeks, Marco Rubio has surged in the polls. Quickly becoming a favorite among conservative leaders such as former Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and conservative columnist George Will — Rubio is becoming a real factor in the Florida senate race. On “Conversations with Jeff Weeks,” Rubio goes into great detail on his solutions for some hot button political issues such as immigration, health care reform, taxes and why less government involvement will promote a healthy economy. Nearly 30 minutes of uncut conversation allows the viewer to get a true sense of what Marco Rubio is all about. “Conversations with Jeff Weeks” is a half-hour, weekly series that is “personality-driven,” featuring in-depth discussions with unique individuals and leading newsmakers from all walks of life. The program airs every Friday night at 9 p.m. on WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast.

Born to Cuban immigrants in Miami, Fla., Rubio spent most of his childhood years growing up in working class West Miami. He earned his juris doctor from the University of Miami in 1996, and then was elected as a city commissioner in the West Miami community prior to being elected to the state house in 2000 at the age of only 30. Until 2008, Rubio served in the Florida House of Representatives in the roles of Majority Whip, Majority Leader and eventually Speaker of the House, where he focused on an agenda of lower taxes, better schools, a leaner and more efficient government and free market empowerment. Since the end of his tenure as Speaker, Rubio has resumed his law practice, served as a visiting professor at Florida International University’s Metropolitan Center, worked as Florida Chairman of GOPAC and as a political analyst for Univision during the 2008 election cycle. He currently serves on several boards and remains engaged in the West Miami community where he grew up. He is married to Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio, and they have four children.

Other upcoming guests include: Jerry Maygarden, Julian MacQueen and Larry Butler.
