Author and Plastic Surgeon Dr. Gaylon McCollough Guests Friday on "Conversations with Jeff Weeks"-- Author of Book on Alabama Coach Bear Bryant --

This Friday at 9 p.m. on WSRE, "Conversations with Jeff Weeks" welcomes author and plastic surgeon Dr. Gaylon McCollough. His vocation is plastic surgery, his avocation is writing -McCollough, a former football player and confidant of Alabama coach Bear Bryant, is the author of "The Long Shadow of Coach Paul 'Bear' Bryant." This week on "Conversations with Jeff Weeks," Dr. McCollough describes what it was like playing for one of college football's most successful and respected coaches. He had the rare privilege of not only playing for Bryant, but as an adult becoming a friend and advisor. During his appearance with Weeks he shares an insider's view of what made Bear Bryant special - from the way he conducted practices to his leadership skills, McCollough gives real examples of how Alabama's favorite son left an impression on so many people. Alabama fans can't miss this interview, but anybody who loves college football will appreciate the inside information shared about this great football icon. "Conversations with Jeff Weeks" is a half-hour, weekly series that is "personality-driven," featuring in-depth discussions with unique individuals and leading newsmakers from all walks of life. The program airs every Friday night at 9 p.m. on WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast.

McCollough, a native of Enterprise, Ala., played on coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's 1964 National Championship football team at the University of Alabama. At the conclusion of the championship season, McCollough was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. After conferring with Coach Bryant, Gaylon passed up the chance to play professional football and instead entered the University of Alabama School of Medicine (now UAB) in Birmingham. Since graduation, he has continued to be involved in the university's athletic and academic affairs. McCollough has won numerous awards both in the football and medical arenas for his outstanding contributions. As an author, he has written several books including medical text books. His latest book, "The Long Shadow of Coach Paul 'Bear' Bryant" explains how the legendary coach influenced his life beyond the football field. In addition to writing, McCollough is a world-renowned physician, teacher and facial plastic surgeon. For over 25 years, Dr. McCollough operated the McCollough Plastic Surgery Clinic and Aesthetic Medical Center in Birmingham. In 1999, he sold his Birmingham clinic, relocated to Gulf Shores, Alabama, and opened the McCollough Institute of Appearance and Health where he currently practices today.
