
McCollough, a native of Enterprise, Ala., played on coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's 1964 National Championship football team at the University of Alabama. At the conclusion of the championship season, McCollough was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. After conferring with Coach Bryant, Gaylon passed up the chance to play professional football and instead entered the University of Alabama School of Medicine (now UAB) in Birmingham. Since graduation, he has continued to be involved in the university's athletic and academic affairs. McCollough has won numerous awards both in the football and medical arenas for his outstanding contributions. As an author, he has written several books including medical text books. His latest book, "The Long Shadow of Coach Paul 'Bear' Bryant" explains how the legendary coach influenced his life beyond the football field. In addition to writing, McCollough is a world-renowned physician, teacher and facial plastic surgeon. For over 25 years, Dr. McCollough operated the McCollough Plastic Surgery Clinic and Aesthetic Medical Center in Birmingham. In 1999, he sold his Birmingham clinic, relocated to Gulf Shores, Alabama, and opened the McCollough Institute of Appearance and Health where he currently practices today.
