WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast, has added the WORLD multicast channel to its lineup. The WORLD Channel features the best of public television's nonfiction, documentary and public affairs programming, including NOVA, Frontline, American Experience, Nature and Charlie Rose.
In an exciting new development, the WORLD service is expanding its content and audience platforms beyond television broadcast. A new Web-based presence, including a stand-alone website at WORLDcompass.org, is in development, which will allow audiences to engage around programmatic ideas extended on-line. The Web presence will fuel content across social media providing opportunities for broader, more diverse audience interaction with timely concepts and ideas presented by video bloggers, and a variety of other interested individuals.
WSRE General Manager Sandy Cesaretti Ray states, "We're excited to be a part of this innovative project. The new, multiplatform concept will provide our viewers added value beyond broadcast by tying national content into local issues. It will help us to reach an even wider Gulf Coast audience, across age, cultural and ethnic differences."
WSRE WORLD will continue to broadcast the popular, signature nonfiction series, complemented by programming from new sources. Both on-air and on-line, the content will feature monthly, theme-based program blocks focused around timely and important topics. The theme for August, "State of Our Unions," explores the unprecedented cultural shift in attitudes towards marriage: Unmarried adults are the new American majority. “To wed or not to wed?” is no longer the only question for the generation known as X. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is funding the development of the national new WORLD model, and the next year’s broadcast of WSRE WORLD.
