As part of WSRE’s ongoing health care initiative and commitment to address our community’s important health issues, the second in a series of four “Inside Healthcare” public town hall meetings is being held on Tuesday, February 9 at the station’s Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio located on Pensacola Junior College’s Pensacola campus. The topic will be “Preventive Medicine.” Free and open to the public, doors will open at 6 p.m. with free health screenings/heart risk assessments by Baptist Heart & Vascular Care and the meeting/TV taping will begin promptly at 7 p.m. The television program is scheduled to air on WSRE Tuesday, February 16 at 7 p.m. and Thursday, February 18 at 7:30 p.m. The audio portion of the meeting will be broadcast live on NewsRadio 1620AM.
In the United States nearly 40% of premature deaths are attributed to unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, poor diets, lack of exercise and uncontrolled stress. What does this neglect do to individual health and that of our healthcare system? An expert panel of guests will explore why the U.S. health care system puts more emphasis on treating disease than preventing it and what the benefits could be if it were reversed.
The panel of experts will include:
Butch Branch, M.S., L.I.F.E. Center Coordinator, PJC Milton Campus
John Lanza, M.D., Ph. D., Director, Escambia County Health Department
Patsy Malley, M.S., Instructor, University of West Florida
Terry Neill, M.D., Medical Director, Sacred Heart Regional Stroke Center
Lonnie Paulos, M.D., Medical Director, Andrews – Paulos Research & Education Institute
Tom Schneider, M.D., F.A.C.S., Medical Director, Florida Healthspan Institute
Steve Willis, M.D., Family Medicine Physician, West Florida Primary Care
The “Inside Healthcare” project, funded by a grant from the Kugelman Foundation, features multiple components — free, open to the public town hall meetings giving citizens the opportunity to ask questions and weigh in on issues affecting them; a TV series produced from the town hall meetings; and a comprehensive website with links to local and national resources. “Health care is a major concern for the people of our area,” states WSRE General Manager Sandy Cesaretti Ray. “WSRE’s Community Health Initiative will identify and address those critical issues to help the people of the Gulf Coast be better equipped with the knowledge and tools to manage their own health. WSRE is pleased to serve as the conduit for this vital information and resources through the power of television.”
Upcoming town hall meeting topics include: medical technology and end-of-life decisions.
