WSRE Hosts "Ludicrously Literate Library Week" in Partnership with Local Libraries

Free community events, on-air programming and online content give families tools to build kids' reading skills all summer long

WSRE has partnered with three regional libraries to host “Ludicrously Literate Library Week” to help bridge the summer reading gap for our area children. Families will enjoy story time, activities and a surprise visit from the WSRE Boy and Girl costume characters. The events are free and open to the public. WSRE launches the tri-county drive to boost summer reading with the following scheduled visits:

Tues., July 12 at noon – Ft. Walton Beach Library, 185 Miracle Strip Pkwy., S.E.

Wed., July 13 at 12:30 p.m. – West Florida Public Library – Downtown Pensacola, 200 W. Gregory St.

Thurs., July 14 at 10:30 a.m. – Milton Library, 6275 Dogwood Dr.

Research shows that children who don’t maintain reading skills over the summer are likely to start the upcoming school year at a disadvantage. To combat this summer slump, WSRE is featuring special PBS KIDS on-air programming and PBS KIDS is offering a variety of online resources for kids and parents as well as many partnership activities available online by visiting www.wsre.org/SummerReadingChallenge. One such partnership includes a national contest encouraging parents to nominate their favorite library. The winning library will receive up to $10,000 in books from Random House Children’s Books, and the parent who nominated them wins a family vacation to Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas.
